Well ladies, it is the realization not only are we half-way through June but officially half-way through the year!
This post is intended to serve as a 6-month check-in to see how you are achieving the goals you set and perhaps reevaluate those goals to end the last 6-months strong.
In my career services training, I just learned about a theory titled ‘Planned Happenstance’. It is the concept of embracing change in regards to your career, but also understanding that change is inevitable in this life. In the same way to expect changes/shifts in your career, I hope to also remind you to do the same with the goals you set this year.
Life happens, so instead of feeling guilty for not achieving the goals you originally set out, instead, put your energy into deciding
what goals are not a priority in this stage of your life?
AND
what are the goals you need to revisit/prioritize?
Here are three examples of goals that are no longer a priority for me this year:
- Training for 2nd marathon in November—welp, I am now having a baby in November–yay, so I am going to defer this for a year, and goal is 2025 Marathon!
- Read 29 books–hah, so I LOVE reading BUT the way this year has played out I have ONLY read 3 books(at this point reading 26 books sounds overwhelming).Instead I have prioritized sleep as I grow my first human.
- Perfect Garden–I read so many garden books and had ambitions to have a Beautiful Homes-Garden level garden. Umm, if you look at my recent garden updates–we are NOT even close. I just got good ole garden soil and one tomato to count at this point. I still hope to slowly fine tune my skills and embrace my “Garden for Dummies” mindset.
Here are three examples of goals that ARE a priority this year:
- Declutter/Organize House–As I prepare for a new stage called Motherhood, I am entering full phase “nesting mode” which makes me eager to get rid of items I don’t need and simplify. This has become a challenge in itself because energy goes in and out after work, so some days I am fully charged to work on projects, while other days I nap A Lot.
- Slow & Restful Season–Going back to the topic of sleep, I am realizing I need to slow down in this season and give myself grace. After work, I used to feel really guilty for wanting to go to bed early, but now I know that is my body telling me I need to rest. Also, allowing more room for SLOW mornings or days that I don’t overbook myself. So, re-emphasizing the napping here, cause sleep is great!
- Spontaneity-I know my ability to be spontaneous is going to be limited with a newborn, SO, I am intentionally not booking up my week in order to make room for more time with friends. This used to stress me out to not have a plan, but now I really enjoy the flexibility that comes with randomly planning a fun night out with a friend.
I hope you feel encouraged to revisit the routines/goals/habits you had set out at the beginning of the year and reflect on what REALLY matters to you at this point in the year?!
Cheers to finishing out 2024 with a mindset to embrace “Happenstance”!
